Educational session

Title: Lean: Back to the Basics

Speaker: Maria Grzanka

The term “Lean” was first introduced in the U.S. by James Womack and Dan Jones in their book, Lean Thinking. Since then, there have been dozens of Lean tools and techniques implemented in many organizations. Each organization puts its own spin on how the tools are implemented. This presentation demonstrates value stream mapping and the 5S as examples to understand the underlying principles.

What you will learn:

Maria Grzanka is a continuous improvement instructor, facilitator, and coach with 20 years’ experience practicing Lean, primarily focused on business processes. She designs and facilitates custom workshops for organizations and coach leaders in developing a continuous improvement culture. Maria is one of many people behind the scenes at Lean Portland and teaches Problem Solving, Lean Business Processes, and Process Improvement in Practice at Portland State University's Center for Executive and Professional Education. Maria holds a degree in Integrated Supply Management and has led Lean implementations at XPO Logistics (formerly Con-way), Vestas, and Tektronix.

Many Lean implementations fall short of the ideal vision and often fizzle out over a few years. Culture is often cited as the reason. At the core of the culture issue is the focus on “Lean Doing” rather than “Lean Thinking” as originally laid out by Womack and Jones.  How do we shift back to “Lean Thinking?” 

The Living Organization® Framework uses a model of Activity, Relationship, and Context (ARC) to explain how results are achieved. The ARC Framework™ complements with other tools and techniques and help understand how to increase the effectiveness in achieving results.
